Overview

Zero Carbon Liverpool (ZCL) City Region is a not-for-profit social enterprise. Their mission is to play a leading role in ensuring the Liverpool City Region reduces its carbon and Green House Gas (GHGs) emissions in line with the Paris Agreement commitments by 2030 and reaches net-zero by 2040. They’ve been on the scene for several years and have established themselves as a key stakeholder in this area, but they had no website to showcase their work, so nowhere to call ‘home’.

Brief and objectives

ZCL are busy people. They pursue their mission through education, networking, raising awareness and delivering carbon-reducing projects of their own.

A friend had built the framework of a website which was due to launch, but it was text-heavy, restricted by the basic templates offered by their domain provider and generally, not very inspiring. Who they are, what they are about and how people could engage with them just wasn’t coming across.

After securing some funding they wanted to use the opportunity to revisit this and set us the goal of designing a website which matched their ambitions and demonstrated to others that they are a serious and credible organisation.

Strategy

The Brand

ZCL already had a logo which they were happy with, and this was a great starting point. It was low-resolution, so we ‘rebuilt’ it, introducing a new colour palette for a cleaner, greener look and feel. It features a clean line drawing of key landmarks in the Liverpool City Region. The sans serif font is modern and bold; reflecting the contemporary approach ZCL take to tackling the quest for net-zero.

Website

After reviewing the draft website, we pulled out the key content and messages, splitting them into logical sections. From this, we devised a much simpler and intuitive navigation.

The updated logo is at the core of the new website, featuring in both the header and footer. Strong colour blocks, taken from the logo’s colour pallet, have been used to divide the various sections and the range of services ZCL offer. As you navigate through the website, green becomes more and more prevalent, reinforcing the group’s commitment to the cause.

Wherever possible, ‘real life’ photography has been selected to reinforce the reality of current environmental issues in and around Liverpool. Instead of stock images or graphics, these will enable readers to connect with news stories or projects featured on the site.

The end result?

A clean, profession website and one VERY happy client who we hope to work with again.
