If you make just ONE new year’s resolution…

2025 Year image

Finding the time to communicate your organisation’s message effectively is hard, isn’t it?!

Maybe it’s that end-of-the-year feeling, but I’ve been reflecting on this lately.

When I used to work as a painter and decorator, there was an expression which went along the lines of “Don’t judge a painter and decorator by the state of their own house”.

Or words to that effect.

I’m pretty sure you could replace any trade with that – joiner, builder, electrician (although I REALLY hope most electrician’s homes are wired safely…).

The point is; when you spend your days making other people’s homes look great, the motivation to get your own house in order – literally – just isn’t there.

You come home tired, put your feet up and simply don’t notice the jobs other people are paying you to put right.

It got me wondering whether the same logic can be applied to ANY service sector?

Here at A Better Planet, we spend our time creating beautiful designs and offering guidance to clients on how to be more effective with their communications.

Create valuable content.

Blog regularly.

Drive engagement.

And yet… when I recently glanced at the Blog page of our OWN website (yep, this one), I was embarrassed to see that an entire calendar year has passed since I last sat down to write anything… and when I did write, it was sporadic at best.

How on earth did this happen?

Where did the last 12 months go?!

And that’s the point of this blog.

When you’re busy doing-what-you-do, it can be easy to put off finding the time to talk about it.

Or, worse still, to forget about doing it completely.

And, if that’s the case, how can you be taken seriously when you don’t practice what you preach?

It’s the equivalent of a wellness coach clocking off, buying a KFC family bucket, a 6-pack of Stella and spending the evening on the sofa chain-smoking and binge-watching Love Island on catch up.

Possibly.

With that in mind (and with a COMPLETE loathing of new year’s resolutions) I’ve set myself the challenge of writing one blog a month throughout 2026.

A goal that sounds achievable, productive and (hopefully) enjoyable.

If I do more, great, but hey, I don’t want to set myself up for a fall.

If I can write something that’s honest, not too contrived, and – when people get to the end of reading it – they don’t think “Well, that was a complete waste of my time”… that’ll do me!

If any of this sounds familiar to you, why not set yourself the same goal to help improve your organisation’s communications and start shouting about what you do?

Or, if you don’t even know where to start when it comes to all-things-comms, or want an outside perspective, why not contact us? We’ll be happy to help.

So, here’s to 2026. The Year of The Blog*
